Demographics

The population of Osage County is approximately 16,712, according to the 2000 census, which represents a 10 year growth pattern which is well over the State’s average. Osage County ranks 33rd out of 105 Kansas counties in population. There is a workforce population of 8089 people with 4750 (60.4%) of those working outside of the county. This figure places Osage County in the position of 3rd highest commuting workforce among Kansas counties, following Douglas and Wabaunsee. All three of these lie adjacent to Shawnee County, home to the Capital City of Topeka.

Osage County neighbors 2 of the 5 largest metropolitan areas in Kansas, namely Shawnee and Douglas Counties. The Kansas City metropolitan area (Johnson and Wyandotte Counties) is approximately 80 minutes away. Wichita, the largest city in Kansas, is about 2 hours away, via Interstate 35.

The most prevalent industry in Osage County continues to be farming, and total farm acreage has grown since 1995.
